In 1950s Russia, the best synthesizer ran on Windows!
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
Wow, nail my hat to the ceiling! I’d never heard of the ANS synthesizer before. Its a 50’s synth from Russia with 800 oscillators controlled by marks on a sheet of glass! I’m a fan of non-Moog music synthesis: any fan of Dr Who (BBC Radiophonic Workshop) would be, and I’ve released an emulation of the Mixturtrautonium , but the ANS has a really unique distinctive sound.

Nintendo DS Lite arrives in the US (or Look Ma! They shrunk the MacBook! :-)
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
The Nintendo DS Lite became officially available in the US today (June 11 - though some stores jumped the gun and had them on shelves last week). Being a doting dad, I went out and bought one for my child (Hey, that’s my story and I’m sticking to it :-) and to compare it to the first generation DS Phat.

Completeness of the e-Security Sentinel technical architecture
Jeff Jaffe · Chief Technology Officer, Novell · general
In my last post I described emerging market forces that are creating a new segment of software infrastructure: the infrastructure for corporate governance. I described how two key components, user management and workflow, already exist in identity management systems (such as Novell’s award-winning Identity Manager). (By the way, e-Security also has a workflow system to...

Laughing at trolls
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
That John Dvorak trolls Mac users is not news. That he is happy to admit doing so is slightly more interesting - it’s more than most newspaper editors will ever do.

Mate Master: Allan Odgaard
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
Allan Odgaard has written a number of applications and utilities in his time as a programmer. He’s written demos for the C64 and calendar apps for the Amiga. He even wrote a nifty MP3 player called MusicMate. But that’s not the “mate” he’s best known for. Allan is the lead- and sole-developer of TextMate , a very highly rated text editor for OS X.

A Universal Binary Only Existence
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
I invested in a MacBook Pro 17” to better handle Aperture, Lightroom, and other demanding apps. In the process, I’ve become hooked in Universal Binary software. So much so, that’s all I want on my MB Pro. But can man live by UB alone?

That Red Flag and English Identity
Haydn Shaughnessy · Founder, TheContentStudio.com · for argument's sake / Knowledge Management
People over in England are exercising their passion for self-reflection (or is it an indulgence?) over the flying of the St George flag during the world cup.Now I happen to be an anti-flag kind of guy, though I think it's appropriate for world cups.

Marketing as a key driver of business growth
Eric Kintz · VP Global Marketing Strategy & Excellence, HP · Platforms
In times of hyper growth in the tech industry, marketers were well known for creativity, great ads and building leading brands. But today as core markets mature, CEOs are demanding one thing and one thing only from Chief Marketing Officers (CMOs): help me drive business growth. However, while the mandate seems clear, few organizations, CEOs and CMOs have successfully implemented this new model. Most marketing organizations have undergone substantial re-organizations in the past few years and CMOs still have the shortest tenure of all C-level executives.

Guardian Anti-Blog Traditions?

A quick, stand to be corrected post about the Guardian's comment is free, the paper's group blog. I find I can't click on the name of people who leave comments to go to their sites. This is hardly in the spirit of blogging.

I’ve been looking for ways to connect web developers with XML since I first got involved in XML, and this year’s XML 2006 conference is offering a whole track designed to do just that. XML on the Web is a new track, focusing on some questions I wish we’d asked more loudly for the past ten years:

Tech Has A New Top Dog
Ray Wu · Director, Venture Management, HP · IT Management
BusinessWeek has recently posted an article on HP is now outselling IBM for the first time in tech history . According to the article, HP will finish 2006 with greater annual sales than Big Blue for the first time ever: $91 billion for HP vs. $90.5 billion for IBM. Also, since HP's has one foot in consumer and the other in enterprise, vs IBM is almost all enterprise focused, HP's revenue is expected to grow faster than IBM. Quote BusinessWeek, "Since both use blue in their logos, you might say there's a new Big Blue in the house."
