Nintendo recalls Wii controller straps

Editor · Wireless

What’s the worst thing that can happen to a new toy at Christmas? How about a recall? Nintendo is recalling 3.2 million straps that hold the wireless Wii remote controllers to your wrist. Of course, Wii owners have been having the problem of the straps breaking and the controllers going flying - often breaking their TVs, windows or other objects in the room. The company is replacing the .6 millimeter-thick straps with ones that are 1 millimeter thick. (We suggest metal chains.) The Wii has outsold Playstation3 by more than a 2-1 margin, in part because of the PS3 shortage. (Photo courtesy Flickr)

The tortoise and the hare

Editor · Enterprise Applications

Business intelligence applications typically deal with data that is already stored, often in a depressing number of places i.e. a number greater than 1. Much BI data is of its nature not real-time e.g. looking at monthly averages or trends. However at the other end of the spectrum there are some applications that are truly...

The Power of Prediction Markets

Editor · Business Intelligence

Having read the EXCELLENT book The Wisdom of Crowds a while back, I'm a huge proponent of doing a lot more work in this intriguing area. Nitin Karandikar over at Read/Write Web has written a post summing up the interesting talk recently at the yahoo.confab event about using prediction markets within organizations. This is the first I've really hard about this idea being used as widely as the enterprise, so it's exciting to see the topic talked and posted about.

Laptop and Video over IP captures would-be Thief

Editor · VoIP

According to a Reuters report , a burglar who broke into a home and was attempting to steal stuff was captured through the assistance of a laptop connecting to a remote security system installed in the home, which included a video camera hooked up to the Internet. A Brazilian businessman traveling in Germany watched by live video as a burglar robbed his house in Brazil. He received an alert on his cell phone from his home security system, booted up his laptop and using video streaming over IP he watched the robber in his home. The police were alerted, surrounded the home, and arrested him. Ain't technology grand? Google to Become Consumer Domain Registrar

Editor

According to this AP story , Google in partnership with domain registrar GoDaddy, will start offering domain registration for the major TLDs at $10 per year. Why is this important or meaningful? Because it becomes a “foot in the door” to offer other services (e.g., website building/hosting, advertising services, productivity tools ) to small businesses.

Jaxtr Launches: Click to Call for Social Media

I’m swamped so I didn’t get around to this yesterday, but Jaxtr launched. Jaxtr is a click-to-call service that offers a widget that can go on any blog or social networking site. Basically it allows users to call each other and redirects those calls to any phone number the user/recipient specifies.

cybercrime syndicates now prefer to use large botnets for launching DoS attacks

Editor · Security / VoIP

First it was spam, now it is phishing. Following months of reports about rocketing levels of junk emails, the Anti-Phishing Working Group has revealed that the number of phishing sites has also demonstrated well beyond average growth this autumn. The APWG released a combined September-October report this month, which shows that there has been a 757% increase in the number of active phishing sites between October 2005 and 2006.

Every now and then I get a but annoyed with malware writers. One instance of this is when I cleared my schedule to analyze some malware, and it turns out that it took me about 5 minutes to analyze the sames and find out that they were nothing more than adware downloaders.

IT and productivity growth: it was nice while it lasted?

Editor · IT Management

I spent last weekend at the Workshop on Information Systems and Economics , catching up with ideas and people. The workshop's organizers scored a major coup by getting Robert J. Gordon to be our dinner speaker. Gordon has been studying macroeconomic trends like productivity growth, income distribution, and the business cycle for a long time, and is that rare academic who has mastered every form of communication, from highly technical articles to more descriptive writing that places IT context with other major innovations to (as we learned) after-dinner speaking.
