Eclipse Callisto: Retreading J2EE's Steps?
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
Is Eclipse relearning the painful lessons of the past? I attended an Eclipse Callisto session this morning at JavaOne, presented by Mike Milinkovich and Bjorn Freeman-Benson of the Eclipse Foundation. Callisto, if you’re not familiar with it, is a brave exercise in release management being attempted by the Eclipse community. The goal is for 10 separate projects (including the Eclipse platform itself, BIRT, WTP, and 7 others) to have their next major versions released concurrently. This isn’t simply a scheduling exercise (though that would be fairly impressive by itself). They are also attempting to achieve compatibility, to a degree, between all of these projects.

Nice
Eric Newcomer · Chief Technology Officer, IONA · Software Development / telecom industry
Today I'm in Nice at the TeleManagement World (TMW). I used to attend these events 10-12 years ago, when I was at Digital. Some things haven't changed - Keith Willets is still talking about the importance of back office standards in the context of telecom industry transformation, and the operators are still talking about new and better services, such as mobile TV.

Mesh Toronto a Success
Dave Carter · CTO & VP Strategy, iUpload · Data Management
Mesh, Toronto's first Web 2.0 conference is over and all-in-all I'd have to declare it a success. Some of the debates that I thought were behind us, were revisited but lots of local folks got to chime in on the topic.

Positioning Technology Services
Dan Socci · Vice President of HP Services, Technology Services Marketing, HP · Enterprise Applications
A number of my past blogs have referenced the HP business unit I work in - Technology Services. It occurs to me I should say more to position this business unit within the broader HP and IT industry landscapes. The Technology Services team provides services primarily on servers and storage as well as software configured with servers. When you visit our Business & IT Services site at http://h20219.www2.hp.com/services/cache/9516-0-0-225-121.aspx you'll see several links that align with Technology Services -

We're all Japanese Schoolgirls Now!
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
I’ve begun to notice the emergence and growth of a new subgenus of AlphaGeek: the “AlphaJunkie”. This sub-species’ defining characteristics are that it is likely to have an apple desktop, a windows desktop, a Linux server at home or in a colo, at least one or more mobile devices, at least one game console (that’s at least five operating systems), and some dedicated device like a GPS or Tamagotchi. That’s a lot of hardware, a lot of software, and one twitchy geek.

A fresh start
David A Chappell · Vice President and Chief Technology Evangelist, Sonic Software · Software Development
Oddness was happening. Over the last couple of weeks, I noticed odd things kept happening on my PowerBook. Shiira would launch but wouldn’t function. Preview did weird things when I tried to quit it. Photoshop Elements 4 wouldn’t launch at all, which was pretty annoying at a time when I was trying to write an article about it .
