What is open-source? The plot thickens.Is open-source a market positioning statement, a business model or merely a production mechanism as Marten Mickos asserts? A number of pundits argue for one of the specific viewpoints. I argue open-source satisfies the test for describing all three. That's the advantage of being associated with a major trend that many are following, which in my view, is more important than trying to create or influence a minor trend that no one is following. It turns out that major trends tend to cross "departmental boundaries." So, in the case of open-source, marketing, engineering and finance can all discuss and promote open-source from their unique perspective.
